In September 2005, a group of people from Big Stone Gap and surrounding communities attended a conference held at Berea College in Berea, Ky.   Berea College has an arm of its College which is called, Brushy Fork Institute .   For more than one hundred years, Berea College has served the people of Appalachia. The Brushy Fork Institute carries forward this commitment by working to develop strong leadership in the mountains. Working with both existing and emerging leaders, we draw on local understanding and vision to help communities build for tomorrow.

The folks who attended this conference came home with a vision to make "The Gap" a better place to live and began meeting on their own to make this happen.

The following attended the conference.  Barbara Polly , Glen "Skip" Skinner , Jack McClanahan , Patti Cantrell , Eddy Giles , and Paul Kuczko.
