Four season decorating contests to promote visible momentum and civic pride.

Fall contest is “FALL in Love with Big Stone Gap”. The winter contest will build from Adriana Trigiani”s new book Coming Home to Big Stone Gap.  Next steps are to plant memorial trees along downtown streets and to initiate downtown façade improvements.

 

GREENBELT CLEANUP PROJECT

Will continue to have work days to clean up the river and add attractive,    educational features to the Greenbelt.

 

COMMUNITY FLAG PROJECT

Design a flag to sell and have everyone in Big Stone Gap flying the flag.

Contest is being promoted through the Post and is open to anyone who lives, works and goes to school in Big Stone Gap.  There will be a youth, adult and a grand prize winner.

 

APPLE BUTTER GANG PROJECT

A youth community service project. The youth must do five hours of community service to be a member. 

 

JEROME STREET DISTRICT PROJECT

Restore homes, build an arts center and make the area around the Trail of the Lonesome Pine Drama an Historic District.

 

SENIOR SERVICES PROJECT

Conducting a feasibility study of types of Assisted or Senior Living facilities that would best fit in Big Stone Gap’s senior residents. The group has been touring facilities and looking at other successful centers.

 

GATHERING IN THE GAP MUSIC FESTIVAL PROJECT

This will be a yearly festival set around the Southwest Museum for local musicians and storytellers.

 

GOSPEL SINGING CONVENTION PROJECT

The singing convention will be 90 years old in 2009 and this group would like to get the convention back to a record number crowd and music groups by 2009. 

 

RECREATION AT BIG CHERRY DAM PROJECT

Strategic plan by the town and an advisory group for the logging and conservation of the area for future recreation uses.

 

                                     

TOURISM STRATEGIC PLAN PROJECT

COMMUNITY WELLNESS CENTER PROJECT

Currently designing a feasibility study to see what Big Stone Gap can support and how to fund it.

 

CHRISTMAS PARADE FLOAT and FESTIVAL OF TREES PROJECTS

For publicity and visibility, Bridging the Gap volunteers will:

-Design and work on a float for this year’s Christmas Parade.

-Submit entry in the Museum’s Festival of Trees.  Bridging the Gap Initiative is compared to

   The Little Train that Could.   I think I can; I think I can…build a better community”.
